Storyboards, both traditionally drawn and digital, are still the quickest, most efficient way to get ideas in front of a number of people. Though they can be beautifully drawn images ready for the "Art Of" books, I prefer to work from the point of view that boards are a tool for production, not an end in themselves.
My experience as a 2nd unit director and cameraman, as well as illustrator, has enabled me to design and quickly draw sequences that more resemble what can actually be shot and edited, rather than "dog and pony show" illustrations. An understanding of lens choices and production logistics helps me communicate with directors and DPs from a production point of view, helping them plan sequences more efficiently when time and budgets demand it.
Storyboard animatics are the next step in determining how well those planned shots will work. Drawings are placed on a NLE timeline and cut to approximate actual running time...though far more complex than a basic "slide show," some shot sequences can be cut and viewed in a matter of minutes, Add simple to complex animation, music and sound effects, and animatics become the quickest, most cost effective way of signing off on sequences...one artist can assemble minutes of finished footage in a matter of hours.
Though many VFX shots might require stepping up to 3D Maya-type "pre-visualization" to provide more technical information, most sequences can be resolved at this stage, rather than working out shots with a more costly and time-consuming 3D pre-vis facility. We can however also provide simple 3D sequences when required...
Though this site is primarily to showcase the pre-production skill set of storyboards and animatics (with an emphasis on Visual Effects Art Direction), I'm also able to offer my experience as an on-set VFX supervisor, matte painter, 2nd unit director and television segment director/producer. As a "one stop shop" for sequence design and supervision, I can help you see your sequences through from idea to photography to post-production animation. Since I'm able to assemble a team of artists and technicians per project, this is especially helpful and cost effective for small-to-mid size productions who don't normally have the budgets for VFX prep and production.
